Dishwasher Error Code E1: No Heating

Has your Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Constructa, or Gaggenau dishwasher displayed error code E1? This error code is specific to the appliance’s heating circuit and signals that the system failed to reach the required target temperature during a specific phase of the wash program.

This usually indicates a problem directly related to the heating element itself, but often, the element is functioning correctly and is being prevented from operating by a safety mechanism. This often occurs in combination with a low water level.

If there is too little water present in the wash tub, the heating switch (or pressure sensor) will not register that the appliance is safely filled. This safety protocol prevents the heating element from being constantly engaged while dry, which would cause immediate damage to the element or the machine. Consequently, the desired temperature is not reached, and the E1 error is triggered.

What to do: Troubleshooting Water Flow and Level

Because E1 is frequently a secondary symptom of insufficient water supply rather than a primary fault of the heating element, initial troubleshooting should focus on the hydraulic system:

  • Check the water level: Ensure there is sufficient water in the dishwasher after the initial filling phase. Typically, the water should cover the base of the tub and just reach the lower edges of the internal filter assembly. If the water level is visibly below this point, the pressure switch will not allow the heating circuit to activate. Consult your dishwasher’s technical manual for the exact required water level specifications if you are unsure.

  • Check the water supply tap: Make sure the water supply valve (the tap connecting the hose to your plumbing) is properly connected and that the tap is fully open. A partially opened tap may allow some water to enter but restrict the flow rate, causing the machine to time out before the required water level is reached, resulting in the E1 error. If your hose has an inlet filter screen where it connects to the tap, verify that this screen is clear of sediment or blockages.

  • Check the water inlet hose: Perform a full visual inspection of the water inlet hose from the tap connection point to the back of the dishwasher. See if the hose is kinked, sharply bent, or otherwise blocked, which would severely restrict the flow. If the appliance has been recently moved, ensure the hose is not crimped behind the machine.

  • Turn the dishwasher off and on again (Power Cycle Reset): Sometimes, a transient electronic fault or a momentary sensing issue can trigger the error. Perform a full power cycle to clear the control board’s memory:

    1. Turn the appliance off using the main power button.
    2. If possible, unplug the appliance from the wall socket for 5 minutes.
    3. Plug the appliance back in and turn it on.
    4. Select a short program and monitor the first filling phase and subsequent heating attempt.
  • Contact a service technician: If the problem persists after you have thoroughly verified the water supply, level, and connectivity, the issue lies within internal components that require specialized diagnostic tools. The heating element itself may have failed (e.g., burned out or developed an internal short), the main circulation pump (which often integrates the heating element in certain models) may be faulty, or the temperature sensor (NTC) or pressure switch may have malfunctioned. In this event, please contact an authorized Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Constructa, or Gaggenau service technician for accurate diagnosis and repair.
