Error Code E333: Drain Pump Not Working (Steam Ovens with Fixed Water Connection Only)

The E333 error code indicates a critical fault within the appliance’s drainage system. This error is specific to steam ovens that are permanently connected (plumbed-in) to a water supply and drain line. The drain pump is responsible for effectively removing condensation and residual water from the steam generator and the oven cavity after a program cycle, preventing flooding and scale buildup.

When this error occurs, the appliance registers that the pump is either unable to operate, is failing to evacuate water adequately, or is blocked, causing the current program to halt for safety.

Possible Causes

Since the pump is not functioning correctly, the cause is typically one of the following:

  • Mechanical Blockage: Foreign debris, food particles, or mineral residue has accumulated in the pump inlet or the internal drainage sump, preventing the pump impeller from rotating.
  • Drain Pump Failure: The pump motor itself has failed, or there is an electrical fault (open circuit) preventing the pump from receiving power.
  • Electrical or Sensor Fault: The appliance control unit (PCB) is unable to correctly detect the operation or status of the drain pump.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting and Solutions

Before contacting customer service, perform the following checks, focusing on clearing any potential blockages, which are the most common cause of this fault.

1. Perform a Power Cycle Reset

A temporary electronic glitch can sometimes trigger the error.

  • Switch the appliance off using the main power button.
  • Unplug the appliance from the wall socket, or switch off the dedicated circuit breaker supplying the oven.
  • Wait a minimum of 5 to 10 minutes to allow the control board to fully discharge and reset.
  • Restore power and attempt to start the appliance.

2. Check and Clean the Drainage Sump (Filter Area)

The drain pump draws water from a collection sump, which often contains a small filter or screen designed to catch debris. Accessing and cleaning this area is crucial for clearing blockages.

  • Safety First: Ensure the oven is completely cool and disconnected from the power supply (as described in Step 1) before attempting maintenance.
  • Locate the Sump: On steam oven models, the drainage sump is typically located on the floor of the cooking cavity.
  • Remove Components: Following the instructions in your user manual, remove any accessible parts, such as racks, drip trays, or the metal cover plate, to expose the drain inlet.
  • Clear Debris: Carefully inspect the opening for any food residue, seeds, scale flakes, or foreign objects that may be obstructing the flow or jamming the pump impeller. Use a damp cloth or a small, soft brush to gently clear away any visible debris.
  • Reassemble: Replace all removed components, ensuring they are correctly seated.

3. Run a Test Program

If the physical blockage was successfully cleared, the error may resolve itself when the appliance attempts drainage again.

  • Close the oven door securely.
  • Plug the appliance back in or turn the circuit breaker on.
  • Start a short steam generation program (if available) or a cleaning cycle that requires water drainage. Monitor the display to see if the E333 error code reappears.

When to Contact Technical Service

If you have performed the power cycle and thoroughly checked and cleaned the drainage sump, and the E333 error code persists, the issue is likely due to an internal technical fault with the pump mechanism or the electronic components.

Contact the authorized brand service center (Bosch, Siemens, Neff, etc.) and provide them with the specific model number (E-Nr) and the error code E333. A trained service technician will be required to diagnose and replace the faulty drain pump or associated wiring/controls.

Note: Since this error involves a core functional component (the pump) on a plumbed-in appliance, internal repairs should not be attempted by the user.
