Washing Machine/Dryer Error Code 5: Motor Problem

If your Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Gaggenau, or Constructa washing machine/dryer displays Error Code 5, the appliance’s control module (PCB) has detected a critical malfunction within the motor system. This specific error indicates that the motor is failing to receive a feedback signal from the tachometer, despite the control unit supplying adequate power.

Understanding the Cause

The motor’s rotation is monitored by a tachometer (a speed sensor) which sends continuous rotational data back to the control board. The control board uses this information to maintain the correct drum speed during wash and spin cycles.

The most frequent mechanical reason for Error Code 5 is:

  • Worn Carbon Brushes: This often indicates that the motor’s carbon brushes have worn past their operational limit. In universal motors (found in many models), the carbon brushes conduct electricity to the spinning armature. Once they become too short, electrical contact is lost. This failure prevents the motor from turning, and consequently, the tachometer cannot send a signal back to the control board, immediately triggering Error Code 5.
  • Tachometer Failure: Less commonly, the error can be caused by a faulty tachometer coil or sensor itself, or damaged wiring leading from the tachometer back to the main control board.

What to do:

Due to the internal complexity and electrical nature of Error Code 5, user-level troubleshooting is not recommended beyond a simple power cycle (unplugging the appliance for 5 minutes and restarting).

It is strongly recommended to contact an authorized repair technician.

The malfunction involves critical electrical components (motor, wiring, control circuits), and attempting internal repairs poses significant risks:

  • Safety Hazard: Working directly with the motor and internal wiring exposes you to electrical shock hazards, even when the appliance is unplugged if capacitors retain a residual charge.
  • Warranty Implication: Unauthorized attempts to disassemble the machine, diagnose wiring issues, or replace components such as the carbon brushes or the entire motor assembly may void any remaining manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Professional Diagnosis: An authorized service technician possesses the necessary specialized tools and training to safely diagnose the true root cause. They can perform electrical continuity checks on the wiring harness, test the resistance of the motor windings, and verify the integrity of the tachometer circuit before replacing the necessary part (be it the brushes, the tachometer, or the motor unit).
