Error Code 15: Extended Drain Time Detected
Appliance Type: Washing Machine
Applicable Brands: Bosch, Siemens
Error Code 15 indicates a problem with the appliance’s ability to complete the draining cycle within the expected time frame. Specifically, the internal monitoring system has detected that the water has not been fully expelled from the drum within the maximum allocated window, which is typically set to approximately 6 minutes. This prolonged drain time signals a potential obstruction or malfunction in the water removal system.
To resolve Error Code 15, the primary focus must be on inspecting and clearing the drain pump mechanism, as this is the most common source of this specific error.
Troubleshooting Steps
Preparation and Safety:
- Before commencing any inspection or repair, always unplug the washing machine from the main electrical supply. This is a critical safety measure to prevent electric shock while working near water and electrical components.
- Ensure you have towels or shallow trays ready, as residual water may spill when the pump filter is accessed.
Check for Obstructions in the Drain Pump:
- The drain pump is responsible for forcibly expelling the water from the tub during the drain or spin cycle. If debris prevents the impeller (the rotating part of the pump) from moving freely, the draining process will stall, triggering Error Code 15.
- Locate the Drain Pump Filter Access: This is usually situated behind a small access panel located at the bottom front of the washing machine casing. Depending on your model, you may need a flathead screwdriver or coin to gently pry this cover open.
- Access and Inspect the Pump: Slowly unscrew the pump filter cap counter-clockwise. Be prepared for water to escape at this point. Once the filter is removed, visually inspect the cavity where it sits.
- Remove Blockages: Carefully remove any objects found. Common blockages include coins, socks, lint clumps, foreign materials, or build-up that may have bypassed the drum seal. Ensure the impeller blades behind the filter housing are completely free of entanglement. Gently try to rotate the impeller by hand (with the machine still unplugged) to confirm smooth, unimpeded movement.
Reassembly and Restart:
- Once you have confirmed that there are no blockages, carefully reinsert the drain pump filter. Ensure it is screwed back in tightly to create a proper seal and prevent leaks during the next cycle. Close the access panel securely.
- Restart the Washing Machine: Plug the appliance back into the power source. Clear the error code (often by pressing the Start/Stop button or powering the unit off and on again) and initiate a short Drain and Spin cycle only. Monitor the cycle closely to verify that the water drains completely within the standard timeframe.
