What does error code E21 mean in your washing machine?
If your AEG, Electrolux, or Quelle-Privileg washing machine displays error code E21, it indicates a problem with the drain pump or the drainage system. This usually means the machine isn’t draining water properly, and the issue can be caused by a blockage or a defect in the pump or associated hoses.
🛠️ What to do for error code E21: Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Before you begin, always remember: safety first!
- Turn off the washing machine and unplug it from the power outlet. This is crucial to prevent electric shock.
- Drain residual water (if possible): Some models have a small hose near the lint filter cap to manually drain the remaining water into a shallow container. Use this feature to prevent flooding when opening the filter.
- Clean the lint filter: The lint filter (or ‘foreign object trap’) is typically located behind a flap or panel at the bottom front of the washing machine, often on the right side. Open the cover, unscrew and remove the filter, and thoroughly clear out all lint, debris, coins, or small objects that may be obstructing the drainage path.
- Check the drain pump impeller: With the filter removed, you can usually see the impeller of the drain pump inside the opening. Check if it’s freely movable. If it’s jammed by a foreign object (like hairpins or socks), carefully remove the obstruction. Caution: Water may spill out.
- Check the drain hose: Inspect the hose that carries water from the back of the machine to your household drain. Ensure the drain hose is not kinked, twisted, or squashed. If possible, disconnect the hose and flush it with water to remove any blockages that might be further along the line.
- Reset the washing machine: Once you’ve checked and cleared potential blockages, plug the washing machine back in and try to start a short drain or spin cycle to test the system.
📞 When to call a technician?
If error code E21 continues to appear after performing all the steps above, it likely points to a technical defect such as:
- A faulty drain pump (the motor has failed).
- A problem with the pressure switch (hydrostat) which incorrectly reports the water level.
- A fault in the electronic control module (PCB).
If you do not feel comfortable performing a pump replacement or deeper diagnostics yourself, please contact an authorized technician for your AEG, Electrolux, or Quelle-Privileg appliance. An expert can safely diagnose the cause and perform the necessary repairs.
