Error Code 12 on Your Bosch or Siemens Washing Machine

Are you encountering the Error Code 12 displayed on the control panel of your Bosch (models often starting with WFW… or WFR…) or Siemens (models often starting with WIQ…) washing machine? This specific diagnostic code indicates a communication or reading failure related to the device responsible for monitoring incoming water volume or flow rate. Essentially, the internal system detects that the sensor measuring water flow, which is typically located immediately adjacent to or integrated with the water inlet valve assembly, is transmitting values that are outside of the expected operational parameters.

To resolve this issue, a systematic check of the components related to water intake is necessary:

  1. Inspect the External Water Supply: Before investigating internal components, ensure the machine is receiving adequate water pressure from the household supply.

    • Verify that the water tap(s) connected to the machine’s inlet hoses are fully open. A partially closed tap will restrict the flow rate, which the flow sensor might incorrectly interpret as a malfunction or blockage, even if the tap is ostensibly “on.”
    • If possible, check the household water pressure to confirm it meets the minimum requirements specified in your appliance’s user manual. Low pressure can cause erratic readings.
  2. Examine the Inlet Hoses and Filters: Debris or physical restriction within the water pathway can lead to inaccurate flow sensor readings.

    • Carefully disconnect the water inlet hose(s) from the back of the washing machine.
    • Inspect the small mesh filters located at the connection point where the hose enters the machine. These filters are designed to catch sediment from your home’s plumbing. If these filters are clogged with limescale or foreign particles, they will severely restrict flow, leading to the error code. Clean these filters thoroughly under running water.
  3. Diagnose the Flow Sensor and Inlet Valve Assembly: If external checks do not resolve the issue, the problem likely resides within the water inlet mechanism itself.

    • The flow sensor is designed to measure the volume of water entering the drum. If this sensor has become physically blocked by debris that managed to bypass the inlet filters, it cannot accurately count the water volume.
    • Alternatively, the sensor itself may have suffered an electrical defect or internal failure. If the sensor is defective, it will send incorrect (or no) signals back to the main control board, triggering Error Code 12. In many Bosch/Siemens models, the flow sensor is integrated directly with the water inlet valve; replacement of the entire assembly may be required if the sensor component is faulty.
